Avebury Henge is thought to have been constructed in Neolithic times around 2500 BC. It consists of an impressively large stone circle surrounded by a deep ditch and a bank. Avebury is not as well known as the iconic Stonehenge and consequently less visited.
At Avebury it is still possible to walk among the stones and sense the unique, enigmatic atmosphere of the prehistoric site. Another unique aspect of the site is that the stone circle contains within it much of the village of Avebury.
Stourhead House and Garden, Warminster, Wiltshire
Celebrated 18th century landscape garden and Palladian mansion.
An outstanding example of the English landscape style. Stourhead was laid out between 1741 and 1780 and includes classical temples, including the Pantheon and Temple of Apollo, set around the central lake. The vistas change as the visitor moves around the paths and through the magnificent mature woodland.
Completed in 1480, the manor house is enhanced by a moat and gatehouse and has beautiful oriel windows and a great hall.
