Dartmouth Castle stands in a superb waters side setting, guarding the entrance to the Dart. Magnificent views and a fascinating past make the Castle the perfect location for a great day out.
One of the most advanced fortifications of Medieval times; this is the first Castle to have been built specifically for guns. It was built in the 15th Century to protect the homes & warehouses of the Dartmouth merchants. John Hawley, mayor of Dartmouth & one of its most colourful citizens, is believed to have been the inspiration for the Shipman in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. For 500 years the Castle was kept in constant preparation for war & was still in active service during both World Wars.
Visitors can see the remains of the small fortress today, explore the 15th gun tower, see the completely re-created Victorian gun battery & climb to the battlements for the spectacular views. Features include hands-on exhibitions & displays bringing to life the 600-year history of the castle, from Chaucer to World War II. An essential part of any visit to Dartmouth, travel to or from the castle taking a boat trip from Dartmouth quayside along the beautiful wooded estuary of the River Dart.
